Windows 7+ Theme Installer by Kishan-Bagaria Windows 7+ Theme Installer by Kishan-Bagaria

UPDATE: New app has been coded from scratch and contains many improvements

Download Link

Windows 7+ Theme Installer is a freeware from door2windows which lets you easily install new 3rd party themes, apply & delete existing themes in Windows 7, Windows 8 & Windows 8.1.

How To Use:

Run the app. On the first run, it will ask if you want to patch the UXTheme files. Patching is required if you want to use 3rd party themes. If you haven't already patched the files (or if you are not sure), click Yes. After some time Windows will automatically log off indicating the patching has been done. Login and run the app again.

To install new themes:
  1. Click the ... button after .theme and browse for the theme file.
  2. If the theme you want to install comes with replaceable system files, click the ... button after the name of the system files and browse for the system file. In Windows 7, instead of TwinUI.dll, options to change Explorer.exe, ExplorerFrame.dll and OobeFldr.dll are available. The app will automatically make sure that the system file which you choose is of the correct Windows version and architecture.
  3. After you have selected the .theme file and the system files that you want to replace, click Install Theme & System Files.
  4. Windows Explorer will automatically restart and the theme and system files will be installed. Select the new theme in the list and click Apply Theme to apply the theme.
To restore the default system files just click Restore Default System Files.

To apply/delete existing themes, select any theme in the Installed Themes list and click Apply Theme/Delete Theme.

What about 64 bits? The problem is that 32bit Windows requires only one explorerframe.dll to be replaced, but 64bits has whole 2 files that needs to be put in seperate folders (.../system32/.../sysWOW64/).

In 64-bit, this app only replaces the files in system32. The files in sysWOW64 are used by 32-bit apps running on the 64-bit emulation layer, not by Windows itself.

If the ExplorerFrame.dll in sysWOW64 isn't changed, the open file/folder dialog in 32-bit apps will show the older navigation frame.

I'll include the functionality to change files in sysWOW64 too if I find a way which doesn't clutter the UI.

Nice job, I'm stranged I've only seen this now!! I have a couple of request though (like with 95% of the soft I find :D):
- Besides the name, which would be really useful, I would love if you could add an option to also select a Preview pic!

Most VSs have a preview pic included, but even if it there isn't any, there is always the chance to download the promo pic from here!

That is in the first download, but like Kishan-said, in the "downloading page", you will see a direct download link near the end of the page (it says "Direct download"). That one is clean.

One request/issue: There is no way to pick a name for installed themes beyond modifying the actual theme files themselves in a text editor. I like how clean and quick this program is to use except for the fact that I can't choose what I want to name the theme when I install it.

Until then I sadly have to keep using other software to do this instead. :(

I'll implement the rename theme feature in the next update of the app.
