Windows 7+ Theme Installer by Kishan-Bagaria Windows 7+ Theme Installer by Kishan-Bagaria

UPDATE: New app has been coded from scratch and contains many improvements

Download Link

Windows 7+ Theme Installer is a freeware from door2windows which lets you easily install new 3rd party themes, apply & delete existing themes in Windows 7, Windows 8 & Windows 8.1.

How To Use:

Run the app. On the first run, it will ask if you want to patch the UXTheme files. Patching is required if you want to use 3rd party themes. If you haven't already patched the files (or if you are not sure), click Yes. After some time Windows will automatically log off indicating the patching has been done. Login and run the app again.

To install new themes:
  1. Click the ... button after .theme and browse for the theme file.
  2. If the theme you want to install comes with replaceable system files, click the ... button after the name of the system files and browse for the system file. In Windows 7, instead of TwinUI.dll, options to change Explorer.exe, ExplorerFrame.dll and OobeFldr.dll are available. The app will automatically make sure that the system file which you choose is of the correct Windows version and architecture.
  3. After you have selected the .theme file and the system files that you want to replace, click Install Theme & System Files.
  4. Windows Explorer will automatically restart and the theme and system files will be installed. Select the new theme in the list and click Apply Theme to apply the theme.
To restore the default system files just click Restore Default System Files.

To apply/delete existing themes, select any theme in the Installed Themes list and click Apply Theme/Delete Theme.

It's not working on my computer. I denied the installation of those junkware applications and access to the Command Prompt.

The program was opened, asked for permissions to open my command prompt but I denied. The installer opened and once it finished, after not installing the other programs, It asked for my command prompt to open again. I denied again and I had a folder by that product name with nothing inside.

Sorry to hear this. It doesn't modify your registry. Only the files listed in the app's interface gets replaced with the ones you choose. They will automatically get restored when you run sfc /scannow. I would have been better able to assist you if I had known what errors had popped up from the app. Are you sure you ran sfc /scannow correctly (it should take about 15-30 minutes to run)?

i resolved with an ubuntu live distro deleting every single file related with the program that was changed to "backup"

I saw your SevenForums thread post, glad it worked. You could just have run sfc /scannow and it would have restored your system easily, you didn't run it right on the first try.

What about 64 bits? The problem is that 32bit Windows requires only one explorerframe.dll to be replaced, but 64bits has whole 2 files that needs to be put in seperate folders (.../system32/.../sysWOW64/).

In 64-bit, this app only replaces the files in system32. The files in sysWOW64 are used by 32-bit apps running on the 64-bit emulation layer, not by Windows itself.

If the ExplorerFrame.dll in sysWOW64 isn't changed, the open file/folder dialog in 32-bit apps will show the older navigation frame.

I'll include the functionality to change files in sysWOW64 too if I find a way which doesn't clutter the UI.

Nice job, I'm stranged I've only seen this now!! I have a couple of request though (like with 95% of the soft I find :D):
- Besides the name, which would be really useful, I would love if you could add an option to also select a Preview pic!

Most VSs have a preview pic included, but even if it there isn't any, there is always the chance to download the promo pic from here!

That is in the first download, but like Kishan-said, in the "downloading page", you will see a direct download link near the end of the page (it says "Direct download"). That one is clean.

One request/issue: There is no way to pick a name for installed themes beyond modifying the actual theme files themselves in a text editor. I like how clean and quick this program is to use except for the fact that I can't choose what I want to name the theme when I install it.

Until then I sadly have to keep using other software to do this instead. :(

Not that I'm stupid, but honestly. Download manager? RLY? Trying to convince me to install tones of crap and in the end saying "no internet connection". No doubt those "useful" programs would download faster than light.

Is this a fool-proof program? I've attemped to install custom Explorerframe.dlls before manually and I ended up breaking it. Luckily through a restore, everything went okay. I promised myself after that not to touch anything delicate in the Sys32 folder. Can I rely on this program to not fuck up on me?

Also, I have this sitting in that folder, too:
i.gyazo.com/55c873ee78f51451a5…

Is it safe to delete the backup?
I must've installed Quickframe to try change the arrows but never bothered to use it.

Great job on updating it, by the way. Sorry if I'm coming off nitpicky or snobby but the shit in these files are so delicate and I can't even trust myself to touch them, I need to make sure first if I'm going to use a program.

This app uses the best replacing component I have ever developed. You can always run sfc /scannow if anything goes wrong (check out my profile page for detailed troubleshooting).

If you have never used QuickFrame (and have the default arrows/buttons) then you can safely delete the .quickframebackup file. This app will automatically make a backup of all the system files it can replace on the first run.

Should I bother getting rid of the .quickframebackup? Will it conflict with your program? I have default arrows now but I'm unsure if I've ever used it or not, it was a while ago. Does sfc/scannow detect if something is wrong in the Sys32 folder?

:iconkishan-bagaria:
Kishan-Bagaria Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2014
No the .quickframebackup is completely harmless, it won't conflict. sfc /scannow restores all modified system files to default.

If you have the default arrows you can use the app without problems.
